Resilience Brokers - Hunter Water partnership

Exploring innovative solutions for a sustainable future in the Lower Hunter

As part of its sustainability strategy, Hunter Water has partnered with Resilience Brokers to bring together industry experts, academia and the private sector to explore a systems approach to waste-to-energy in the region.

The project is designed to contribute to the New South Wales Government’s vision for the Lower Hunter of embracing a sustainable future for the region, balancing environmental, economic and social outcomes so that quality of life can be enhanced without burdening future generations.

Resilience Brokers, Hunter Water and key stakeholders from the region will work collaboratively to explore, in detail, how innovative approaches to systems change can add long term value.

The waste-to-energy field is rapidly growing in Australia and this partnership will help explore how systems thinking can identify new opportunities and innovative solutions for a sustainable future in the Lower Hunter.

Chief Investment Officer, Hunter Water

The project consists of a series of meetings and a multi-stakeholder, multi-sectoral workshop, facilitated by the Resilience Brokers’ team, with the aim to:

  • Identify opportunities for collaborative learning and integrated planning and design.
  • Review demonstration of systems modelling and digital tools.
  • Explore waste-to-energy as a solution to a set of regional challenges (including as set out in the Hunter Regional Plan 2036).
  • Identify investment opportunities and business models to codevelop waste-to-energy infrastructure and policy solutions.

The project will conclude in September 2018, coinciding with the release of a detailed report, aimed to help inform waste-to-energy strategies as part of a systems-approach to integrated, collaborative regional planning and development.
